The Company was formed in 1951 by formed by an ethnic Chinese businessman Oei Wie Gwan. He bought a small cigarette company NV Murup with brand name Djarum Gramofon in Kudus, Central Java. PT Djarum officially launched in 1979. In 1998, PT Djarum led by the Hartono brothers, acquires majority control of the third biggest banks in Indonesia PT Bank Central Asia Tbk.
