The relationship between Indonesia and the United Kingdom has strengthened in recent years and we now work closely together on shared priorities, such as climate change and tackling terrorism, in a number of international for, including the G20 and the UN. In order to strengthen our engagement and understanding of the Indonesian context the British Embassy is recruiting a Political Analyst whose focus will be to analyze and report on political developments in Indonesia as well as Indonesia’s engagement in regional and global affairs.

The job-holder will work in the political team at the British Embassy as well as liaising with Foreign and Commonwealth Office colleagues at other Embassies in the region and those in London, reporting to the Political Secretary at the British Embassy in Jakarta.

This will be an exciting and challenging role in the Embassy, working closely with colleagues in the political, media and communications, climate change and commercial teams, as well as DFID and the British Council.

The British Embassy Jakarta is currently seeking to fill the following vacancy

POLITICAL ANALYST

Job Responsibilities
  • Monitor report and offer high quality analysis on Indonesian political developments - particularly in relation to reform, conflict issues and good governance - and their likely impacts.
  • Understand and offer analysis on the Indonesian government’s policy approaches, both within Indonesia and in terms of their foreign relations.
  • Develop an excellent network of contacts; across government, academia, politics, civil society, business and think-tanks.
  • Acquire a good understanding of UK policy priorities and offer advice on furthering these with Indonesia.
  • Provide high quality briefings to senior diplomats and visitors. Facilitate visits by UK Government Ministers and officials and advise on visits to the Indonesian regions by Embassy staff.
  • Deliver presentations on aspects of UK policy to a variety of Indonesian organizations.
  • Develop strong working relations with all teams in the Embassy, including the Department For International Development, UK Trade and Investment and the British Council.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of three years work experience in a relevant field
  • A degree (preferably Master degree) – majoring in International Relations, Politics or a similar subject
  • Excellent communication and networking skills in English and Indonesian (both oral or written, IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)
  • Good IT skills and experience, including MS Office
  • Excellent understanding of the Indonesian political scene
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work under light supervision (eg on regional visits)
  • Strong interpersonal and team-working skills
  • An understanding of international relations and familiarity with the UK would be an advantage
